Alex Whatley – Marine Innovation Service Manager
Alex manages the Marine Innovation Service and is the primary contact for provision of technical consultancy and support to marine companies.
Alex has a wide ranging background in the marine industry, focusing on the pragmatic implementation of technology and the management of both private and commercial projects. He has been self-employed, working on projects which included consultancy on the building and evaluation of racing yachts, private consultancy on the purchase of cruising yachts, and fleet management. In addition to studies and industry experience, Alex’s marine expertise is built on a lifetime of sailing and seagoing, including commercial skippering, managing the provision of safety cover for waterside construction sites, teaching navigation in Adult Education, boat repair, and equipment sales.
Alex’s expertise spans the following areas:
- Small Craft Design
- Composite materials technology
- Marine production management, building to Classification Society approval
- Commercial operation of small craft
Alex has a BSc (Hons) Yacht Manufacturing & Surveying from Southampton Institute of Higher Education, a Post Graduate Certificate in Post-Compulsory Education & Training from the University of Plymouth and is currently studying for an MSc Marine Technology (Small Craft Design) through the Marine Technology Education Consortium.
He is an Associate Member of the Royal Institution of Naval Architects
